1. Faster Pathway for Suitable Candidates
If you already have relevant workplace experience, RPL may reduce the time needed to work toward a qualification compared with starting from the beginning.
Can reduce unnecessary repetition
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Recognition of Prior Learning can help eligible candidates use existing skills, work history and practical
experience as part of a more efficient pathway toward formal recognition.
Right Pathway is not a Registered Training Organisation. All qualifications are assessed and issued solely by our partner RTOs under the Australian Skills Quality Authority framework.
Short answer: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may help eligible candidates reduce unnecessary study, present existing skills through evidence, follow a flexible assessment pathway, support career progression, and work toward nationally recognised Australian qualifications through partner Registered Training Organisations. For some candidates, an RPL qualification may also serve as a foundation for university study under the Australian Qualifications Framework — with university admission and credit decisions made solely by the institution.
Recognition of Prior Learning may help experienced workers avoid repeating training they may not need by assessing the skills and knowledge they have already developed through work, prior study and practical experience.
For eligible candidates, this can create a more efficient and flexible pathway toward formal recognition. If you want to explore available options, you can view our RPL qualifications or read more about the RPL process.
If you already have relevant workplace experience, RPL may reduce the time needed to work toward a qualification compared with starting from the beginning.
Can reduce unnecessary repetition
By focusing on evidence of existing competency, RPL may help suitable candidates avoid paying for training they may effectively already meet through prior experience.
More targeted than full repeat study
Evidence can often include work references, resumes, prior study, portfolios, workplace documents, photos, reports and interviews, depending on qualification requirements.
Built around documented real-world experience
A formal qualification may help strengthen your resume, improve professional credibility and support access to new roles, internal advancement or broader responsibilities.
Helpful for professional development
Many parts of the RPL process can be completed online, making it easier for busy professionals to organise and submit evidence around work and personal commitments.
Designed to fit around existing schedules
Where issued through the appropriate framework, RPL can contribute to outcomes aligned with recognised Australian qualification standards.
Supports recognised qualification pathways
A nationally recognised VET qualification obtained through RPL is issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and may be presented to an Australian university as the basis for advanced standing or credit toward a bachelor's or master's degree. Under the AQF, a Diploma (Level 5) may provide up to approximately 33% credit toward a relevant bachelor's degree, and an Advanced Diploma (Level 6) may provide up to approximately 50%. A Graduate Diploma (Level 8) may support up to 50% credit toward a relevant master's degree or MBA.
This means that for eligible professionals, RPL is not just about formal recognition of existing skills — it can also be the first step in a longer academic journey. Right Pathway supports the RPL evidence preparation stage only. University admission, credit decisions and degree completion are managed entirely and independently by the university.
Indicative AQF Credit Guide
| Qualification | Indicative Credit |
|---|---|
| Diploma (Level 5) | Up to ~33% |
| Advanced Diploma (Level 6) | Up to ~50% |
| Graduate Diploma (Level 8) | Up to ~50% |
Indicative maximums only — not guaranteed outcomes. Credit is determined solely by the university.

What are the main benefits of RPL?
RPL may help eligible candidates reduce unnecessary study, present existing competency through evidence, follow a more flexible assessment pathway, support career progression and work toward recognised outcomes. For some candidates, an RPL qualification may also serve as a foundation for university study under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
How long does the RPL process usually take?
Timeframes vary depending on the qualification, the quality and completeness of your evidence, and assessment requirements. Many candidates complete the process more quickly than traditional study pathways. Typical outcomes are 4–8 weeks from evidence submission.
What evidence can be used for RPL?
Evidence may include resumes, job descriptions, employer references, previous study, portfolios, workplace documents, photos, videos, reports, licences and interviews, depending on the qualification requirements.
